Holley continues to gobble up the biggest in performance parts brand names with Halibrand being the latest to join their fold. With a wonderful wheel history that dates back to the 1940s, Halibrand has long been synonymous with fast cars and sharp styling.
Henry “Ted” Halibrand’s day job in the aircraft industry put him in close proximity with strong yet lightweight materials. While those specialty ingredients were becoming commonplace in aerospace due to the demanding nature of the application, many of those metals hadn’t made their way into mainstream hot-rodding.
The Halibrand Engineering Company came to fruition in 1947 as Ted set out to meld maximum strength and speed at the track with magnesium rolling stock. Their kidney bean wheels were a signature calling card that graced a great many race cars on the oval and, later on, at the strip.
That success helped drive market share in other driveline components as well. Quick change center sections, also crafted from magnesium, became another track staple as the overall goal was to shrink sprung weight.
In the Mopar realm, Halibrands were most likely to be spotted on some of Chrysler’s most celebrated throttle smashers.
Racers like Don Garlits rolled Hemi-powered smoke on mag rims. Mr. Norm’s 1971 Super Challenger was another proud patron, outfitted with color-matched Halibrand hotness.
Moving forward under the Holley umbrella, Halibrand is sure to carry on a rich racing history as a number of vintage tool sets and documents were part of this acquisition that’s a match made in motoring heaven.
